Report highlights:

A 43% growth was seen for packaged water for Q1-14 compared to Q1-13. Due to low entry barriers and lack of innovation in the category, state governments have entered this segment aggressively.
In early 2014, Tamil Nadu government and Kerala government launched brands AMMA and Hill Aqua. These brands took advantage of the captive state running outlets at lower retail prices.

The change in consumer preferences towards healthier options is expected to show a stable growth in the packaged water category, however the growth will obviously be more in comparison to the carbonates which saw growth of 14% in Q1-14 compared to the same period in 2013.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) are monitoring and exercising their control over soft drinks. This move is expected to significantly improve health consciousness amongst the consumers.
