The digestive system consists of collection of organs which convert food into nutrients and energy to be used by the body. These organs consist of the tongue, salivary glands, gastrointestinal tract (alimentary canal), pancreas, liver, stomach and gallbladder, which are collectively known as digestive organs.
Digestive system or gastrointestinal (GI) disorder refers to diseases related to the malfunction of digestive organs. There could be various causes for GI diseases such as poisonous or contaminated food, effect of certain drugs, toxins, infections, genetic anomalies or any other unknown causes. The most common symptoms include abdominal pain or distention, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, bloating and constipation.
Digestive system diseases can be broadly divided into functional disorders and structural disorders. Functional disorders are the most common disorders and they effect colon and rectum. Constipation and irritable bowel syndrome are the most common functional disorders. Structural disorders are disorders where bowel does not work properly and generally requires surgical intervention. Haemorrhoids, anal fissures, perianal abscesses and anal fistula are some examples of structural disorders. Crohn’s disease, peptic ulcer, cirrhosis, oesophageal diseases and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) are other common GI diseases.
As GI diseases are generally chronic in nature and can be life threatening in certain situations, diagnosis in early stages and proper treatment is necessary. Techniques such as electrogastrography (EGG), Computer Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanning are used to diagnose these disorders. Treatment usually includes over the counter or prescription drugs. However, trend is emerging for natural and holistic therapies such as stress management, healthy diet plan and exercises to manage and prevent GI disorders.
