Driven by consumption upgrades, sustainable development and the rise of emerging markets, the global coffee bean market has shown great growth potential. According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), global coffee bean consumption will be about 10.17 million tons in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 0.3%.
The European Union is the world's largest coffee consumption market, accounting for 25.68% of global consumption in 2023. The United States is the world's second largest coffee consumption market, accounting for 16.04% of global consumption in 2023. In addition, coffee consumption in emerging markets such as Asia and the Middle East is growing rapidly, becoming an important growth pole in the global coffee market.
Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, and Ethiopian coffee beans have a long history. According to CRI analysis, Ethiopia has the most diverse coffee varieties on the planet, mainly Arabica coffee. Heirloom (local native species) is the most representative coffee variety in Ethiopia. Ethiopia is the largest coffee producer in Africa and the fifth largest coffee producer in the world. In the 2022-2023 fiscal year, Ethiopia's coffee bean production was about 500,000 tons.
Coffee beans are one of Ethiopia's most important export products, and coffee export revenue accounts for about one-third of Ethiopia's total exports. According to CRI data, in 2024, Ethiopia's coffee bean exports reached approximately US$1.696 billion, a year-on-year increase of 24.6%.
According to CRI analysis, the main export destinations for Ethiopian coffee beans include Europe, Asia-Pacific and some Middle Eastern countries. European countries mainly include Germany and Belgium, and Middle Eastern countries mainly include Saudi Arabia. Asia-Pacific countries include Japan, South Korea, China, etc. From 2021 to 2024, the top three export destinations for Ethiopian coffee beans are Germany, Japan and Saudi Arabia, which together account for about 53% of the entire export market. According to CRI analysis, the companies that import coffee beans from Ethiopia from 2021 to 2024 are mainly overseas trading companies, and the main exporters of Ethiopian coffee beans are mainly local trading companies in Ethiopia.
Overall, the production and export volume of Ethiopian coffee beans are showing a trend of continuous growth. According to CRI analysis, with the continuous growth of global coffee demand and the improvement of Ethiopian coffee bean planting area and technology, Ethiopia's coffee bean production and export volume are expected to expand further in the next few years. CRI recommends that global coffee bean traders and coffee brand companies should investigate the Ethiopian market as soon as possible to obtain good coffee bean procurement channels.
