Tempered glass (also known as reinforced glass) falls under the category of safety glass and is sometimes referred to as toughened glass/strengthened glass. Its high strength, resistance to heat, and safety characteristics when broken make it an ideal material for various industrial and daily applications. It is widely used across sectors such as construction, automotive manufacturing, home appliances, electronics, furniture, solar energy, and public transportation.
From a production perspective, the major global producers of tempered glass include the United States, Japan, China, Germany, and South Korea. These countries possess mature manufacturing industries, advanced industrial foundations, and robust tempered glass production capabilities. According to CRI, North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region represent the primary consumption markets for tempered glass globally. Within Southeast Asia, Vietnam's tempered glass production capacity is relatively low, leading to a reliance on imports to meet the rapid demand growth from its construction, furniture, and electronics manufacturing sectors.
With the rapid development of Vietnam’s construction industry, infrastructure projects, and electronics manufacturing, the country’s tempered glass market is in a phase of significant expansion. CRI’s analysis highlights that Vietnam is one of the fastest-growing automotive markets in Southeast Asia, with passenger and commercial vehicle production and sales rising sharply, directly driving demand for tempered glass. At the same time, Vietnam is undergoing rapid urbanization, further boosting demand for tempered glass in the construction and infrastructure sectors. Additionally, Vietnam has emerged as a major global hub for electronics manufacturing, particularly for products like smartphones, televisions, and computers, which significantly contributes to the demand for tempered glass.
Despite some recent improvements in Vietnam’s domestic tempered glass production capacity, it remains limited compared to global manufacturing powerhouses and is primarily concentrated on mid-to-low-end markets. As a result, most high-end or technologically advanced tempered glass products are still heavily reliant on imports.
CRI data indicates that Vietnam’s total tempered glass imports reached USD 927 million in 2023. From January to July 2024, cumulative imports amounted to nearly USD 488 million, reflecting robust growth. This trend is expected to continue in the coming years.
According to CRI, Vietnam's primary sources of tempered glass imports include China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States, South Korea, and Japan. Among these, China is a significant supplier due to its geographical proximity, comprehensive industrial chain, and cost-effective products. From 2021 to 2024, the top three sources of Vietnam’s tempered glass imports were China, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. Major exporters to Vietnam include companies such as Xinyi PV Products (Anhui) Holding, Lens Technology Co. Ltd., and JNTC Co. Ltd. On the importing side, key Vietnamese companies include Vina Solar Technology Co. Ltd., JA Solar Vietnam Company Limited, and Boviet Solar Technology Co. Ltd.
Overall, Vietnam’s tempered glass market is expanding rapidly, driven by growth in the construction, infrastructure, automotive, and electronics manufacturing sectors. However, the country’s domestic production capacity for tempered glass remains limited, especially for high-end products, which continue to rely on imports. CRI’s analysis suggests that with increasing foreign investment in Vietnam and advancements in its manufacturing technologies, local tempered glass production may improve over time. However, this is likely to be a long-term process, with imports of tempered glass expected to continue rising over the next 5–10 years.
