The prefabricated construction market in Africa and Middle East is expected to record steady growth over the medium term. The growth will be driven by new project undertaking by both the public and private sectors. To tap into the growth market, firms are setting up automated factory for modular building construction in Saudi Arabia. MS-Metals, for instance, is expected to commence operations at its new factory in Saudi Arabia in 2024.
Several projects have also been undertaken in various African markets and more are expected to be launched over the medium term. Kwikspace, the modular buildings firm based in South Africa, is seeking to tap into the growing market. The firm has completed various projects in the domestic and other regional markets over the last few years. Overall, ConsTrack360 maintains a positive growth outlook for the broader construction industry in Africa and Middle East in 2024.
Firms are setting up automated factory for modular building construction in Saudi Arabia
With modular construction industry poised to record strong growth over the medium term, firms are setting up a fully computerized and automated factory dedicated to producing metal solutions and modular building components.
- The plant being developed by MS-Metals aims to take advantage of the booming construction market in Saudi Arabia. The rising value of construction contracts, along with the growing scale and complexity of projects like Neom, has driven innovation in the construction manufacturing industry. The planned MS-Metals plant will cover a total area of 33,400 square meters, including 13,500 square meters dedicated to production facilities and 12 assembly lines for its various products.
Once operational, the factory will provide light gauge steel (LGS) structures for modular and prefabricated buildings, as well as bathroom and kitchen pods and containerized modular units for construction projects in Saudi Arabia and the wider GCC region. Located in Tabuk, the factory will use computer numerical control (CNC) technology, which employs preprogrammed software to automate its machinery. The firm states that this factory will be the only one in the Kingdom capable of constructing modular and light gauge steel (LGS) buildings up to five stories high.
South African modular building firm is seeking to tap into the growing regional market in 2024
The African prefabricated construction industry is experiencing steady growth and the trend is projected to continue further in 2024. Several projects have been undertaken in various African markets and more are expected to be launched over the medium term. - Kwikspace, the modular buildings firm based in South Africa, is seeking to tap into the growing market. The firm has completed various projects in the domestic and other regional markets over the last few years. Kwikspace, for instance, offered assistance in the development of the Neckartal Dam in Namibia. Kwikspace provided site offices covering 1,206 square meters and a remote camp covering 3,500 square meters for Salini Namibia (Pty) Ltd, the construction and engineering company in charge of the project.
- Kwikspace, in Mozambique, supplied site offices and workforce housing for about 240 personnel at the ROMPCO Loopline 2 Project in Fulhalouro. This project involved building a new pipeline to transport natural gas from the Temane and Pande gas fields in Mozambique to Secunda in South Africa. The modular units, totaling over 4,400 square meters, were quickly brought in from Kwikspace’s Tete and Pemba facilities to meet a tight deadline. They also installed finer details like furniture, fittings, and equipment.
The firm, in May 2024, also revealed that it has been chosen for the design, supply, and installation advanced ablution top structures at 12 targeted schools in South Africa. All of these projects are aiding the firm’s growth, while also supporting the growth of the broader regional market in 2024.
Edge computing firm has partnered with engineering and cloud firm to deploy data center modules in the Middle East
Armada, an Edge computing company that emerged from stealth in December 2023, has partnered with Edarat Group, a data center engineering and cloud services firm in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in March 2024.
Through this partnership, Edarat Group will deploy Armada’s modular data centers, called Galleons, across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and MENA region. According to Armada, Edarat plans to acquire 10 Galleons in 2024. Armada, based in Washington, raised US$55 million when it launched in December 2023 for its Edge computing modules and management platform. The firm provides rugged, self-contained satellite-connected data center modules, which are available in 3-rack 20ft and 6-rack 40ft models, using SpaceX’s Starlink network.
