Report Description

According to ConsTrack360, the electric vehicle market in the country are expected to grow by 28.9% on an annual basis to reach US$44.6 billion in 2023.

The medium to long term growth story of the electric vehicle market in Germany remains strong. Electric vehicle adoption is expected to grow steadily over the forecast period, recording a CAGR of 24.2% during 2023-2027. The electric vehicle market in the country will increase from US$34.6 billion in 2022 to reach US$106.1 billion by 2027.

The electric vehicle penetration is rising at a significant pace in Germany and the trend is projected to further continue over the next three to four years. Government initiatives, including the solar subsidy program, have driven the adoption rate of electric vehicles among Germans.
The investment in the sector is expected to grow over the next few quarters, thereby subsequently aiding the industry growth from the short to medium-term perspective. Although the German market is poised for growth over the next few years, German-based manufacturers including Volkswagen, Audi, and BMW are finding it difficult to compete with Tesla in the global market.

Tesla continues to lead the electric vehicles industry and is selling more EVs than all German brands combined

Tesla, one of the leading players in the global electric vehicles industry, is giving tough competition to EV manufacturers from Germany. The firm sold more electric vehicles in the first six months of 2023 compared to those sold by all German EV brands combined.

  • Although inflationary pressures in the European markets are resulting in a tough economic environment for German brands to operate in and expand their market share, Tesla’s far longer presence and more enhanced product line and infrastructure in the BEV sector have helped the firm to sell more cars compared to German brands.
As a result of this, some of the German electric vehicle manufacturers like Volkswagen have also announced temporary production cuts. Volkswagen, for instance, cut the production of two EV models due to weaker demand for their electric vehicles. The growing market share of Tesla in Germany and other global markets can further dampen the growth prospects for German EV makers from the short to medium-term perspective.

Sales of all-electric vehicles doubled in Germany in August 2023 revealing that the adoption is growing at a rapid rate

The high awareness of electric vehicles in Germany is also translating into sales in 2023. This is evident according to a report published on INSIDEEVs. The report revealed that new car registrations surged 37% year over year during August 2023. The plug-in electric car sales increased to the highest level in August 2023.
In 2023, alone, more than 463,000 new plug-in electric vehicles have been registered in Germany. The adoption of BEV is also fast growing in the German market. These trends are expected to continue in Q4 2023 and Q1 2024, thereby further aiding the growth of the German electric vehicles industry from the short to medium-term perspective.

Germany halts e-cars solar subsidy program due to high demand for electric vehicles

Germany has been adopting initiatives to push forward the adoption of electric vehicles among its citizens over the last few quarters. With these initiatives serving their purpose, the authorities are now halting the programs.
  • KfW, in September 2023, announced the suspension of a solar subsidy program designed to support the charging of electric vehicles using solar power within residential settings. The decision to suspend the program comes days after the launch of the program. This is because there has been an unexpected rapid depletion of its financial resources, which was primarily driven by the overwhelming surge in demand.

Within the first 24 hours of the launch, KfW received nearly 33,000 applications, showing the overwhelming response towards the subsidy program. While the transport ministry earmarked a significant 500 million euros for the subsidy program, 200 million euros was reserved for the next year. Going forward, ConsTrack360 expects more such program launches in Germany, further aiding the popularity and adoption of electric vehicles among consumers from the short to medium-term perspective.
