Ontario is Leading the Floriculture Industry in Canada

There is a growing demand for fresh cut flowers, potted flowering plants, and bedding plants in Canada. Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec accounted for the majority of Canada’s total floriculture sales, with Ontario contributing more than half of Canadian sales at 51.2% in 2018. According to the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Nearly 90 percent of ornamental gross farm gate receipts are distributed amongst three Canadian provinces namely Ontario (50%), British Columbia (24 %), and Qu?bec (14 %). Export Drives the Canada Ornamental Horticulture Market

Canada’s largest ornamental trade partner continues to be the United States, accounting for 99.3% of exports and 47.8% of imports in the sector. Canadia’s worldwide exports totaled USD 398.0 million in 2018, and imports amounted to USD 401.1 million. In 2017, the greenhouse-grown plants and cut flowers like gerberas, tulips, snapdragons, lilies, and chrysanthemums are shipped to the lucrative markets of the United States as part of Canada’s annual USD 334.6 million in floriculture export sales. According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, under the Growing Forward AgriMarketing program, more than CAD 390,000 funding has been given for Flowers Canada Growers (FCG) to build standardized training for an export certification system and to support marketing activities. Canada’s floriculture exports are primarily to the United States, covering 80% of the export followed by Panama, Bermuda, Aruba, Mexico, Japan, Denmark, and the United Arab Emirates.
