Lead is one of the heaviest non-radioactive metals found in the earth’s crust and occurs in stable isotopes of lead 204, 206, 207 and 208. Lead is generally found in volcanogenic massive sulphide and sedimentary exhalative type of deposits and is extracted from ores of silver, zinc and copper. Typically, lead is used across various applications such as construction, batteries, radiation shield and weights. Lead is mined in more than 50 countries globally with Australia, China, Peru and Russia contributing more than 75% of total mined lead globally.
Apart from primary production from lead mines, more than half of overall consumable lead is derived from secondary production involving recycling of batteries and other scraps. Also, unlike other recycled metals/minerals, recycling of lead is self-sustainable and economically viable. In addition to known applications, lead is also used in automobile, infrastructure, power generation & transmission and telecommunication sectors.
Since the last decade, the industry has been witnessing considerable growth contributed by high demand of energy storage solutions especially lead-acid batteries. However in coming years, the industry may witness weaker growth due to the rising healthcare concerns, weak project pipeline and adoption of strict environmental regulations. Consequently, this may considerably reduce the attractiveness for identification & development of lead mines and secondary lead production. Regardless of the slowdown globally, Peru is expected to observe relatively optimistic growth accounting to strong project pipeline across minerals producing lead as a by-product.
In spite of weak growth of the industry, many emerging countries are investing in smart grid technologies using lead-acid batteries in electric vehicles (EV) owing to rising demand of power. Moreover, with increased adoption of advanced vehicle technologies like hybrid & start-stop vehicles, industry may witness rise in innovation in lead-acid battery segment. However, lead pollution and poisoning is fastest-growing health concern that may pose a big threat to the lead mining industry growth in future.
