New materials are being utilized to achieve increased durability because they are more robust and are lighter. For example, new titanium alloys such as Ti 10-2-3 (Ti 10V 2Fe 2Al) and Ti 5-5-5-3 (Ti 5 Va 5Mo 5Al 3Cr) are largely being utilized in aircraft landing gear. Several of Boeing 787 landing gear components such as the main gear inner cylinder use titanium alloys. Titanium provides more strength compared to the existing steel alloys and is also lighter in weight. Conventional steel (300M and 4340 steel) is also being replaced with AerMet100 and AF1410 alloys.”
