According to the report, one of the main drivers in this market is the requirement for a reduction in carbon emissions and increased efficiency. Countries worldwide are endeavoring to reduce their emissions and also to ensure energy security.

Further, the report states that one of the major challenges confronting the market is the capital-intensive nature of clean coal projects. The more sophisticated the technology used, the higher the capital and operating costs requirements associated with the clean coal project. As a result, advanced clean coal technologies (IGCC or CCS) are not widely used, as they are still not cost-competitive compared with other cleaner sources of energy such as renewables or gas.
