Epicast Report: Celiac Disease - Epidemiology Forecast to 2023, Now available on ASDReports
Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that occurs in individuals who consume gluten-containing foods but are intolerant to gluten, a protein found in many grains, such as wheat, rye, and barley. In celiac disease, the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the villi of the small intestine and thus interferes with nutrient absorption. This report provides an overview of the risk factors, comorbidities, and the global and historical epidemiological trends for celiac disease in the six major markets (6MM) (US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and UK). It includes a 10-year epidemiological forecast for the total prevalent cases of celiac disease in the 6MM segmented by sex and age (0–19 years, 20–29 years, 30–39 years, 40–49 years, 50–59 years, 60–69 years, and ≥70 years), and a 10-year epidemiological forecast for the diagnosed prevalent cases of celiac disease in the 6MM.

The total prevalent cases of celiac disease in the 6MM increased from 5,808,840 total prevalent cases in 2013 to 8,084,021 total prevalent cases in 2023, at an Annual Growth Rate (AGR) of 3.92% during the forecast period. In the 6MM, the pediatric and young adult population (ages 0–19 years) represents the age group with the highest number of celiac cases, with 1,300,571 total prevalent cases (22.39% of all total prevalent celiac disease cases). The distribution of the total prevalent cases of celiac disease in the 6MM was slightly lower in men than in women, with 2,683,144 diagnosed incident cases in men (46.19%) and 3,125,696 diagnosed incident cases in women (53.81%). The diagnosed prevalent cases of celiac disease in the 6MM increased from 761,724 diagnosed prevalent cases in 2013 to 1,112,928 diagnosed prevalent cases in 2023, at an AGR of 4.61% during the forecast period. GlobalData epidemiologists forecast an increase in the diagnosis rate of celiac disease from 13% in 2013 to 14% in 2023.
