International arrivals to Singapore increased from 7.2 million in 2009 to 11.3 million in 2013, increasing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of just less than 11% during the review period. Due to the small size of the country, Singaporeans prefer outbound travel. The number of outbound trips increased at a review-period CAGR of just over 5% to reach 8.7 million in 2013 of which just over 60% were leisure trips while 19.5% of the total trips were for visiting friends and relatives (VFR). Government efforts to support the sector include investment to improve transport infrastructure, the development of new tourist attractions and promotion campaigns, and are expected to fuel the sector‟s growth over the forecast period (2013–2018). International arrivals to Singapore are expected to increase at a forecast-period CAGR of just less than 8% to reach 16.4 million by 2018.
