Oil & Gas Pipeline Outlook APAC - New Pipeline Construction Concentrated on Natural Gas
China and India Lead on Active and Planned Oil and Gas Pipeline Lengths, Respectively

China leads the Asia-Pacific countries in terms of active oil and gas pipeline length, with its pipeline network of 34,526 miles (mi) (55,564 kilometres (km)), accounting for around 27.5% of the region’s total active pipeline length. India, on the other hand, leads the region in terms of planned pipeline length addition by 2020, with its plan to add 12,721.6 mi (20,473.4 km), accounting for over 34% of planned pipeline length addition in the region during this period.

After China, India and Australia have the next longest networks of active oil and gas pipelines in the region, with 22,631.9 mi (36,422.5 km) and 16,866.2 mi (27,143.5 km) respectively. Together, these three countries account for around 59% of the total active pipeline length in Asia-Pacific.

After India, Turkmenistan will witness the next-largest planned pipeline length addition by 2020, with 5,001.4 mi (8,049 km) added. India and Turkmenistan together account for 47.5% of the pipeline lengths planned to be built in the region by 2020.

Gas Pipelines Account for Majority of the Active and Planned Pipeline Length in Asia-Pacific

There are currently 518 active oil and gas pipelines in Asia-Pacific, with a total length of 125,560 mi (202,069 km). Of these, 335 are gas pipelines, with a total length of 81,036 mi (130,414 km), or 64.5% of the total active pipeline length in the region.

Gas pipelines also account for the majority of pipelines planned to be built in Asia-Pacific by 2020. Of the 125 planned oil and gas pipelines in Asia-Pacific by 2020, 99 will carry gas, with a total length of 29,981.9 mi

(48,251.2 km). Planned gas pipeline length in the region accounts for 80.4% of the total planned pipeline length to be built by 2020.

The following figure shows the length and number of active and planned oil and gas pipelines in Asia-Pacific by type.
