Growing Electricity Demand and Increasing Enviromental Concerns Driving the HRSG Market in Asia-Pacific Region

The growing demand for electricity and increasing environmental concerns are the major drivers for the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) market. The power markets of many countries in the Asia-Pacific region have started focusing on issues related to climate change both in order to meet government-mandated environmental legislations and to reduce their dependency on imported energy. Governments and utilities face the challenge of having to increase their power capacities to keep pace with economic growth, while at the same time minimizing any environmental impact. It is believed that combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plants are the solution for all such energy-related challenges. Moreover, international agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol have made the outlook for coal-fired generation bleaker, as the world looks to decrease the level of harmful emissions put into the earth’s atmosphere. This shift towards cleaner and more energy-efficient options for power generation has resulted in the growth of the HRSG market, as HRSGs are used in CCGT plants.

Economic Downturn Poses Challenge for the HRSG Market Until 2015

A decreased demand for power has been witnessed since 2009 due to the global economic downturn, which has adversely affected natural gas prices, creating downward pressure on new investments in the Asia-Pacific region. At present, there is low demand for new installations, with several cancellations or delays of utility programs due to financing issues. This is expected to result in a gradual decline in sales in the HRSG market during the period 2011-2015. Sustainable recovery is still uncertain, with significant concerns that the global economic recovery from 2008 could stall, inhibiting investments in this sector.

The HRSG markets of countries such as India, South Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia have been significantly impacted by the deteriorating economic landscape and the subsequent consequences, such as increases in natural gas prices.

Increasing Competition in the HRSG Market

The number of vendors in the HRSG market is increasing and, as a result, the level of competition has also grown tremendously. Most of the HRSG market in the Asia-Pacific region is controlled by companies such as Alstom SA, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co. Ltd., Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, AE&E Australia Pvt Ltd. and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. There is strong competition between these manufacturers to achieve the greatest market share. The tier one manufacturing companies are likely to dominate the market and put the tier two companies in the shade due to their ability to provide integrated HRSG solutions, as compared to the exclusive pieces of HRSG equipment or units provided by tier two manufacturers.
