International hotel groups are opening up more hotels in the midscale segment due to a substantial increase in interest
In total, 54% of North American business traveler survey respondents stay of hotels for an average of ‘2-3 days’, while 27% stay for an average of ‘4-5 days’. The average length of stay at business hotels is dependent on the provision of amenities and flexibility in guest negotiations by hoteliers. Amenities including, but not restricted to, free internet access, complimentary breakfast, parking and easy access to nearby business centers are considered key factors that influence frequency of visits and average length of stay for corporate travelers.

Of the North American survey respondents, 39% expect ‘North America’ to offer the finest hotels for corporate travelers in 2013-2014, while 23% expect ‘Europe’ to offer the finest hotels. In addition, 19% of survey respondents expect ‘Asia’ to offer the finest hotels for stay during business travel.

In total, 47% of North American respondents selected ‘regular brand’ as the preferred method of hotel selection, while 45% selected ‘company recommendation’ and 38% selected ‘online search’. Previous experience at a hotel, various features and amenities present in the hotel, and accessibility of a hotel may be reasons for which North American business travelers prefer ‘regular brand’.

Expected Hotel Types
As companies see business travel as a necessary expense, it is important to understand and analyze the essential pre-requisites for the effective selection of hotels. Respondents were asked: “Which type of hotel do you expect to visit over the next 12 months?” The responses were analyzed by travel frequency, gender, age and company turnover.

Of the respondents from North America, 48% expect to visit ‘midscale’ hotels in the next 12 months, while 35% plan to visit an ‘upscale’ hotel and 7% expect to opt for a ‘luxury’ hotel. Midscale hotels in North America are experiencing a strong growth in RevPAR and ADR. Additionally, international hotel groups are opening up more hotels in the midscale segment, with the rising demand for ‘midscale’ hotels and their plans to cater to different consumer segments
