The soft tissue laser market consists of diode lasers, CO2 lasers and Nd:YAG lasers. While dental lasers are seen by many dentists as an unnecessary piece of equipment given the cost, the adoption rate continues to rise and the market is continuing to grow steadily. Lasers are extremely costly devices in relation to other competing dental equipment, such as drills, but prices have decreased over the past decade and more dentists across the U.S. are seeing the benefits of laser technology. The diode laser market segment was the largest of the three. Diode lasers remain the most popular option for dental offices, particularly those purchasing lasers for the first time, due to their affordable pricing. In comparison to all other lasers discussed in this report, both surgical and welding, diode lasers are significantly more affordable than the next most affordable dental laser type. This has facilitated growth of this market segment, enabling diode lasers to penetrate the market much more quickly compared to all other dental laser types. Furthermore, there are far more competitors in the diode laser segment than in the other two, putting further downwards pressure on prices. This is especially true in the U.S. where there are a large number of local manufacturers who focus almost exclusively on their home market, unlike other regions in the world which are dominated by more global players.
