One of the fastest emerging verticals within the electronics and media space, the global electronic design automation (EDA) market is poised to record a lucrative growth trend through 2027. The rise in use of IoT, connected devices, and automotive electronics will drive future EDA trends.

Highly specialized and complex semiconductor devices power today’s advanced devices and systems from smartphones and computers to autonomous vehicles and data center infrastructure. EDA is among the key technologies that make these applications feasible. EDA workflows are highly complex and include frontend design, verification, simulation, and backend workloads such as design rule checks, timing and power analysis, and other applications.

Electronic design automation includes different products and services including computer aided engineering (CAE), semiconductor intellectual property (SIP, printed circuit board (PCB), multi-chip module (MCM), and IC physical design and verification.

Among these, the semiconductor intellectual property segment is likely to witness robust growth up to 2027 due to increased demand for secure silicon IP which is required in telecommunication systems, computer peripheral devices, consumer electronics, and networking. It also finds extensive application in IoT, connected technologies, and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Today, EDA wide-ranging applications in automotive, aerospace & defense, consumer electronics, telecommunication, medical, industrial, and many other areas. With ongoing technological advances, the application scope of electronic design automation in consumer electronics is expanding rapidly. The trend of miniaturization of electronic systems is fueling the demand for EDA tools capable of enabling high-performance compact chip design.

The EDA industry in North America is garnering momentum with expansion of the regional automotive and consumer electronics sector. With increased integration of complex electronics systems in vehicles, there is a significant demand for electronic design automation tools and technologies.

North The robust automotive manufacturing sector in North America will propel the demand for EDA solutions over 2021-2027 with the need for integration of complex electronics in cars. The regional players are adopting numerous growth strategies including strategic collaborations to boost their market presence and lead innovation in the space.

In April 2021, for instance, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and ARM, a leading chipmaker and silicon intellectual property developer, formed a partnership to demonstrate electronic design automation in the cloud. As per the partnership, ARM will leverage AWS for cloud applications, including a variety of its EDA workloads. The chipmaker is reportedly migrating its EDA workloads to the AWS cloud platform.

The migration to the cloud could help ARM overcome some of the constraints of conventionally managed EDA workflow and gain flexibility through highly scalable compute power. This in turn could enable it to run parallel simulations, streamline analysis, minimize time for semiconductor design, and add testing cycles without affecting delivery schedules.
