The global market for Plowing and Cultivating Machinery is forecast to reach US$14.6 billion by 2024, driven by the surging need to feed a growing population and the ensuing focus on farm productivity and yields per acre. Also fueling adoption of mechanized farming machinery are factors such as chronic agricultural labor shortages; availability of government policy led programs, subsidies and funding for equipment purchase; continuous innovation and introduction of new machinery features and functions; rising biofuel demand and the resulting focus on increasing production of energy crops as feedstock for growing biodiesel production; and growing competitive pressures which necessitate farmers to run cost effective and efficient operations. Benefits of mechanization making it an important national priority in agriculture development include increase in per man productivity; increased production in the form of higher yield of land per unit of area; lower cost of labor and a parallel reduction in cost of production and food prices; aids in better use of land; helps preserve soil fertility and reduce risk of soil erosion; helps farmers shift from ‘subsistence farming’ to ‘commercial agriculture; reduces dependence on labor and decouples the industry from labor shortage risks; and generates higher farm income. A key trend in the market is the rise of conservation tillage practices and the ensuing commercial popularity of plowing machines such as of Zero-Till, Strip-Till, Ridge-Till and Mulch-Till Machines with features such as in-built residue management systems such as chisel plow and sweep tiller designs that leave 50%-70% of cop residue on the soil surface; chisel or disk systems/ rotary tiller and spring tooth cultivator to prevent soil erosion; and rod weeder built for shallow ploughing and preparation of firm seed bed. Asia-Pacific represents the largest market worldwide. Backed by the presence of China and India, the region also ranks as the fastest growing market with a projected CAGR of 8.6% over the analysis period. The U.S. and Europe represent other important markets with growth supported by the demand for larger, higher power and more technologically intensive machinery suited for large, consolidated farmlands.

Product Definition & Scope
Plowing machinery includes farm implement used for breaking up or loosening the soil and cutting furrows in preparation for sowing. These machines are used for various operations, such as furrow plowing, disc plowing, and shallow plowing. Cultivating machines are used for working, weeding or smoothing the soil after plowing or during the growth of the crops. Plowing and cultivation tools are implements used to cut furrows by means of sharp edged steel, which are disc or saucer shaped. The implements are set obliquely to the ground surface and are operated by disc ploughs, animal or tractor. The machines detach a slice of soil vertically from the under soil. Some of the plowing and cultivation implements discussed in the report are plows, harrows, mowers, cultivators and planters.
