Thoracolumbar spinal fusions and their associated fixation implants represent the second-largest segment of the European spinal implant market. This chapter will review the procedures and markets associated with instrumented spinal fusions where a fixation stabilization device is installed within the lumbar and thoracic regions of the spine.
To ensure that the spine is held in a proper healing position for fusion to occur, pedicle screws/rods, plates and interbody devices are installed surgically and implanted permanently into the patient. Thoracolumbar fixation is typically segmented by pathology, including devices used in the treatment of degenerative, deformity and trauma/tumor cases. Pedicle screw/rod fixation devices are only installed from a posterior surgical approach, whereas plates are installed either from an anterior or a posterior approach.
