As of 2016, the largest and fastest growing segment in the market was for synthetic bone graft substitutes. The strong growth of the synthetic market was a result of the affordability of synthetic products, as well as the strict regulations of allograft and DBM product usage throughout Europe. Furthermore, synthetic products have a very low risk of infection, which is another driver of growth.
Both the smallest and fastest declining segment was the DBM market. The decline in the DBM market was a result of high price and lack of clinical evidence regarding the product’s benefits. DBM products are commonly banned in the Scandinavian regions. While the majority of the 15 countries show a decline in DBM, both in price and quantity, consumption of DBM products in the U.K. and Switzerland are set to show moderate increases. This is due to the strong nation-wide beliefs in the products. Surgeons in these countries believe in the product and it is predicted that their demand will remain constant over the forecast period.
The second largest segment in 2016 was the allograft market. The larger ASP of allograft material allowed it to remain the market leader until recently. Allografts were particularly popular in the U.K. and Spain. While allograft material had been on the decline in Italy due to cultural disapproval, it is predicted that the Italian market will, over the forecast period, grow more accepting of using these materials.
