Current-generation cockpits are not completely equipped to handle the growing complexity of the operating environment and increasing amount of data volume. Advanced technologies are required to improve the safety and efficiency  of any new avionics, as well as to introduce new functionalities and capabilities in the cockpit system. This research service offers insights on how different technologies may evolve to design the cockpit of the future. It also offers an in-depth perspective on the road ahead, capability and maturity of the technologies enabling the future cockpit. It also provides a road map where  it is portrayed how different technologies are evolving and converging to enable advanced  capabilities of the cockpit system.

Key Findings
  • Enhancing communication technology is observed to be one of the key areas of focus. Seamless communication with continuous data streaming from the cockpit could bring in enhanced safety in transport and could also open up opportunities for new technology implementation such as cloud computing and big data analytics for advanced cockpit applications.
  • One of the key efforts amongst the aviation industry participants is to make the cockpit smaller and user friendly. For example, touchscreen-based displays are attracting huge interest in the aviation marketplace as the touchscreen capability enables simple human-machine interfaces, allows simpler presentation of system procedures as well Key Findings as flexible configurations of the cockpit system.
  • Cloud computing could prove to be a major facilitators for cockpit application management in the future. Scalable data storage in the cloud could help in the development of emerging applications like predictive weather forecasting, aircraft equipment monitoring and many more.
  • Synthetic Vision System (SVS) is going to be an integral part of the Next Generation Air Transportation Systems. Supplemented by enhanced vision system (EVS), the combined system would result in better visibility, leading to greater situational awareness for the pilots. The breadth of SVS products available in the marketplace suggests that the market participants have identified that SVS not only increases the safety and efficiency of aircraft operations, but also minimizes operational errors and pilot workload.
