Additional report highlights:
The South African government’s commitment to improve its infrastructure facilities through the
National Infrastructure Plan is expected to strengthen domestic iron ore exports over the forecast period. The Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission (PICC), established by the South
African government to plan and coordinate a National Infrastructure Plan has identified 18 strategic integrated projects (SIPs), of which No. 5 has a particular emphasis on iron ore mining related investment, the Saldanha-Northern Cape development corridor.
The Saldanha-Northern Cape development corridor – SIP 5 – includes the development of rail and port expansion to increase the annual iron ore exports through the Saldanha port to ~82 Mt, which will increase iron ore exports by 40% compared with the current exports. The three main project components of the overall expansion project include mine-side ore loading, iron ore rail transport and a port iron ore terminal. The proposed facilities will develop a consolidation yard for off-loading, blending and the stockpiling of various grades of iron ore, to be loaded onto the trains for export via the Port of Saldanha.
